Toenail removal surgery patient information
The aim of the surgery is to permanently remove all or part of the problem nail.
If you have a toenail problem that cannot be resolved by routine care, you may be advised to have part of; or the whole of the nail removed.

Total toenail removal surgery is where the nail is completely removed and treated so it doesn't grow back.

Toenail surgery may be advised for cases such as repeated ingrowing toenails. Ingrowing toenails can be common and in some cases can be caused by improperly cutting your toenails or wearing footwear that doesn't fit properly.

What are the benefits of surgery?

The result should be that the pain caused from an ingrowing toenail[s] and infection has resolved.

The assessment:
What does this involve?

• The initial nail surgery consultation will take around 25-35 minutes,
• Please wear a top so we can take your blood pressure at the top of your arm,
• We will discuss the options available to you,
When we have discussed and agreed the best treatment for you, you will be asked to read the information leaflet, take away with you and sign,
• In some cases we will also speak to your GP,
• If nail surgery is needed, this will take place on a different day,
• If you are classed as low medical need (i.e. not diabetic or there is no infection), a date for surgery may not be given at the assessment, and you may be placed on a further waiting list. This will be explained at your assessment.
